Dr. Sara Safari had no mountaineering background when she decided that the way to fund
scholarships for girls in Nepal — girls at risk of trafficking and forced marriage — was to
climb the highest mountain on earth.
Above the Mountain's Shadow is the account of what that decision cost and what it
gave back: the training, the altitude, the 2015 Nepal earthquake that struck while she was
on Everest, and the long argument with herself about whether to go back.
It is a climbing book only on the surface. Underneath it is about the girls the climb was
for, and about what becomes possible once you accept that the mountain does not care who
you were before you started.
